When turning on the air conditioner, you have the option to choose auto cool. What is this function for since there’s the thermostat regulates the on/off of the compressor?

Most heat pump a/c systems have an auto option. This means if you turn the temperature to 25oC (77 F) it will distinguish if it requires to heat your room or cool it, as well as adjust your fan speed & vanes (although most have auto fan & vane options anyway). So I would imagine the button you state is this.
However, a long time ago I remember a cooling only A/C that had an auto function on it. It was a button to press on the remote & it brought the a/c down to a comfortable temperature according to how low the ambient temperature was. I thought it was a good idea, but i’ve never seen it since.
Also, is the button you state on the remote? I ask because on most wall mounts under the front cover there is a button (some which state auto), this is if you loose your remote. There are some a/c wall mounts that have a small tab which you can select between ‘test’, ‘auto’, and ‘fan’, again these options are if you loose the remote (test is for the engineer).
Hope that helps
