If you are using Excel 2002 or Excel 2003, the AutoSave add-in has been made a permanent part of Excel. In this version, you enable AutoSave by following these steps:
1. Choose Options from the Tools menu. Excel displays the Options dialog box.
2. Make sure the Save tab is selected. (Click here to see a related figure.)
3. Use the controls on the tab to indicate how you want the saving to occur.
4. Click on OK.

Go to the menu option of TOOLS and select OPTIONS… Then go to the SAVE tab. You should be able to apply your changes there.
Then just make a change to an existing MS-Excel workbook and wait for the allotted time. The change should be automatically saved.
To turn on autosave:
Go to Tools->Options
Click on the save tab then click the Save autorecovery every check box and set the number of minutes you want the auto save to work.
Specify where the autosave directory should be if necessary.
Click OK.
To test it, open a new blank sheet, save it using any name. Make some changes and don’t save them, but wait at least the number of minutes you specified above then turn off your PC(or you could just end th eexcel.exe application in the task manager if you know how to do that)
Turn it back on, start up excel and on th eleft hand side should be informaiton about the autosave files that were stored.
