There are many auto service providers who are happy to give you auto repair quotes. You can either get them from the service provider in your locality or from the leading auto repair company in your area.

Before getting a quote, make a preliminary list of repairs that need to be done that you know of. If you are not clear as to what you need, you may end up spending wasted time and money of what could have been just a simple repair. Go to your local mechanic for quotes before deciding on where to take your automobile. They will give you an idea as to exactly what expenses are involved, and what repairs are critical, as opposed to not necessary. You may decide to stick with your mechanic or go to a dealer for repairs. Whatever you decide, you’ll have valuable information in your hands regarding the repairs that need to be done, and what one mechanic would charge to do the repairs.

There are also free checkup camps that are held at major car dealer manufacturers. Here, your car will be evaluated for problems at no charge to you. If problems are found, these events may even offer discounts on parts and repairs that you can take advantage of. They will also give you repair quotes that you can pass on to a repair shop.

If you know what is the kind of repair that is needed for your car, then you can get auto repair quotes online on websites dedicated for autos. All you have to do is type in information about you and your car and what repairs need to be done. You will receive instant auto repair online quotes. You can get auto repair quotes from multiple vendors and compare them to get the best deal.

If you have had a car for awhile that you really love, but you feel it is time to upgrade, there is an option other than buying a new car. You can have auto customizing done to make your old car a new car. When you have auto customizing done, your old car will look completely different. When it is done by a professional – who knows what they are doing – even your friends may not realize you are still using your old car. It can look that different.

There are several ways to customize your vehicle. First, you can have the car repainted. When a new paint job is done on your vehicle, the old paint is sandblasted away to create a clean surface. The good thing about this is that it allows the painter to see areas where rust is breaking through. They can patch those areas, then repaint the vehicle. With a new paint job, your car will look completely different. Like a new haircut and a shave for some men, a new paint job creates a whole different look. This will typically cost you a few thousand dollars depending on the paint and how extensive the new paint job has to be.

Next, get body work done on your vehicle. This can be as simple as removing dents and replacing parts of the body that may be missing, or it can be more extensive like putting in a new hood or door, or putting on a spoiler. Either way, it will make your vehicle look very different when you have body work done on your vehicle. In terms of customizing a vehicle, you can even have a whole new body put on the vehicle. Of all the things that can be done to your vehicle to customize it, this is the most expensive and the most extensive.

Next, have the interior of the car redone. Get some new upholstery for one thing. Maybe put in leather and take out the polyester seats. You can get a new sound system put in and even have a new dash with more displays put into the car. This is expensive but usually not as expensive as a new paint job or body work on the vehicle.

Lastly, you can customize your vehicle with new tires and rims. New tires will look great on your vehicle and when you get the right rims for the cars, it can complete the customized look for you. There are few better ways to make your car look different without paying too much than with new rims and tires. If you get rims that spin while the car is stopped, your car will have a look that cannot be rivaled.

Auto customizing is a thriving industry because many people love their cars and want to keep them, but want to upgrade them to look more with the times. Depending on how much money you have, the scope of the customization is completely up to you.

A car service manual is a repair manual that is published by the car manufacturer and contains information about how to repair, maintain and diagnose the engine and all the components of your car.

There is also a type of service manual that is published aftermarket from various companies such as Bentley, Haynes and Chilton. The difference between a car manual that comes directly from the manufacturer and the aftermarket service manual is the amount of information provided in the manual. A car manual should provide detailed information and diagrams to help you troubleshoot all repair issues. There are car manuals that are published and designed directly the car manufacturer their information is prone to be more correct than the after market service manuals, also called Factory Service Manual. A factory service manual should contain information that is per manufacturer specifications such as intended torque, and various other standards specified by the manufacturer.

Another distinct difference between an aftermarket manual and a factory manual that is directly from the dealership is that the factory manual will have illustrations that are drawn to the correct size for the page they are printed on. In fact the manual itself will be of a better quality even down to the paper than after market service manuals. Aftermarket service manuals will usually cover a wide range of years for you make and model of vehicle where a car manual will be specifically for your make, model and year of vehicle. For example if your vehicle is say a 2000 Toyota Corolla an aftermarket manual will have from 1995 to 2000 in the same manual.

Aftermarket manuals are great for providing general information however if you are looking for information on a specific problem then a factory auto repair manual is generally your best bet.

Treating your car to both regular and major tune ups will certainly improve its performance, prolong the life of its engine and dramatically increase fuel efficiency. With today’s constantly increasing fuel prices, it pays to keep your engine in top condition to minimize gas consumption.

Major engine tune ups can be pretty expensive when done by the dealer. It will be more practical to get to know a mechanic who owns a garage to ensure you won’t get ripped off. Or you can perform a do it yourself tune up and maintenance of your car’s engine. Here are some basic tips.

Ignition and electrical systems

Inspect your car battery levels four times a year at the very least, at each season change. Top off low levels with distilled water. Remove corrosion from cable clamps and terminals by using a wire brush and a little baking soda. This practice will extend battery life.

Spark plugs should be replaced every 35,000 miles, or if they’re platinum, replacements are required every 65,000 miles. Check the spark plug for cracks and corrosion and change them if damaged. Get high quality cables for added durability and reliable performance.

Get a new distributor cap with each major tune up, if the cap is not attached permanently to the spark plug cables. Also replace the rotor of your distributor, if it has one, as some new model cars don’t have either a distributor cap or a rotor.

If your car is a 1978 model or older, replace the contact points and condenser. Newer car models have electronic ignitions and don’t require condensers or contact points. Contact points should be aligned or replaced two times a year.

Oil and fuel systems

Unless your car has hydraulic valves, adjustment of valve covers is a necessity. While you’re at it, also replace the valve cover gasket. If done properly, this will prevent oil from leaking out on top of the car engine.

Inspect the timing belt and readjust or replace it if needed. Electronic ignition-equipped cars don’t often come with timing belts, while some do, so you have to be certain.

Inspect the fan belt and other belts. If they are cracked, frazzled or worn out, consider replacing them at once.

If your car has a fuel injector, you don’t need to clean it regularly. Clean it only if it gets clogged and use only clean fuel bought at a gas station. The fuel filter needs to be changed every 35,000 miles.

The air filter has to be replaced every 15,000 miles, or if it is already covered with dirt. Keeping your air filter clean ensures a more efficient fuel burn, thus minimizing gas consumption.

Brakes and clutch

If your car has a manual transmission, the clutch will require certain adjustments. Newer model cars are now equipped with adjustable clutch. Consult you manufacturer’s manual to be certain.

Oil, brake and transmission fluids should have their levels checked every week, or before and after long drives. Have an oil change and oil filter replacement every 3,000 miles as having clean engine oil prolongs the engine’s life.

You can do your own tune ups to increase fuel efficiency, gain better engine performance and offer a smoother ride. This is not an assurance that you won’t run into any car troubles, but do it yourself car tune ups will save you a lot of money in maintenance and repairs.

When you own a car you know that there will be some point that you will have to have auto parts for it. When your car breaks down or you need to tune it up, you will have to have car parts to fix it or to keep it in good shape. This is just something that everyone has to deal with if you are going to drive.

Now before you get any auto parts you want to make sure you know what to get. The best thing you can do is to take your car to someone that knows a lot about them. They will be able to tell you what is wrong with it and what auto parts you need to fix it. If you know about cars then you can easily figure out what the problem is and then get the car parts you need to fix it.

One thing that you want to remember no matter who fixes it is that auto parts don’t come cheap. Most of the parts you will need will cost you a little bit of money to a lot of money. It just depends on what needs to be fixed. When you have auto warranty on your car the major repairs and parts will be covered so it won’t cost you much of anything.

You always want to make sure you get a professional to look at your car before you buy any auto parts for it. Now when you need to get car parts there are a couple of different places that you can find what you need.

One: You can go to a local auto parts store to get what you need. There are usually many different stores that you can go to when you need car parts.

Two: You can also go online to find the auto parts that you need. There are many auto stores that are putting websites up online. This allows them to make more money and you to get the parts that you need.

Just don’t let anyone talk you into anything that you don’t need. If you are unsure about anything than it is always a good idea to find someone who knows about auto parts to help you choose what you need. If you can you want to get the help of someone who knows you so that you don’t spend any extra money on car parts you don’t need.

As we drive down the road today we notice that a lot of vehicles are in need of auto body repair. There are many different auto body repairs that can be completed on all vehicles now a days. Most are driving with a damaged vehicle because they don’t realize what auto body repairs can be completed. Or they think that the auto body repairs will cost too much or take up too much of their time. However there are some many auto body repairs that are in fact affordable and can be completed quickly. Here are a few auto body repairs that should not be put off anymore on any vehicle.

If your vehicle has dents or dings you should consider getting paintless dent removal. Paintless dent removal can be completed quickly, usually in just under a few hours or less. Also it is very affordable. Paintless dent removal is where dents are massaged out using reflective sources, rods and other special tools. There are not paints or fillers used in the whole process, so the original finish of your vehicle will not be compromised. This is such a great repair solution that no one should be driving with dents and dings anymore.

If your windshield is cracked or chipped you need to get windshield repair. Most times people think they will need to replace the whole windshield. However if you get the repair completed soon after the crack or chip occurred, it can easily be repaired. It really takes no time for a repair specialist to repair, and sometimes auto body shops offer a mobile service where they will come to you and repair your windshield. As for cost, it is affordable, and most times your car insurance provider will pay for most of or the entire repair.

Also many people do not realize that most bumpers can be repaired. If your bumper is made of plastic, it can easily be repaired. And it can be repaired for a fraction of the cost of bumper replacement. Getting your bumper repaired is a quick repair and won’t be too much money out of your wallet.

Paint touch up is also a repair that should be completed on your vehicle is your paint is cracked, chipped or scratched. If your paint is cracked, chipped or scratched you are leaving your vehicle open to getting rust. No car owner wants to deal with rust. Paint is acts as a sealant on your vehicle, so getting that little bit of paint touch up is important.

Also many interior repairs can be done to the inside of your vehicle. If your headliner is falling, if you have any rips or tears in the upholstery, if there are cigarette burns, if your dash is cracked or whatever else you should contact an auto body shop to complete that repair for a lower cost than replacement.

There are many repairs that can and should be completed on all vehicles to keep them safe and keep them looking great!

Auto repair is a headache for motorists all over the world. Repair and replacement of parts have become so costly that motorists are looking for cheap auto repair as an alternative to regular repair.

Many auto repair firms advertise to repair vehicles at cheap rates but they do this by using inferior parts and employing unskilled workers. Generally, specialized shops, including transmission repair and old car repair shops, offer cheaper auto repairs compared to general shops. There are even general repair shops that provide you quality repair at cheaper rates.

It is imperative that you discuss the exact nature of the repair job and take time with the mechanic before you actually launch the repair. Most of the modern vehicles have computerized monitoring systems, which help mechanics identify problems easily. Auto repair manuals and guides call tell you details of each repair job and the normal time taken for each. These manuals can be bought from auto parts shops in your neighborhood.

Online you can find many experienced mechanics advertising cheap auto repair. They do brake jobs for as little as $50.00 and many other repair jobs just as cheap. There are also part-time mechanics who do most of their work at their own house and are ready to do cheap auto repair on request.

Cheap auto repair is usually sought by people who are money-minded. Cheap repair has many drawbacks too. It is not reliable, and often functionality is not guaranteed. Mechanics doing cheap auto repair generally do not give proper attention and, in many cases, inferior parts are used. Cheap auto repair can lead to long-term problems that may sometimes cost you much more money in the long run.

Worrying whether or not you were overcharged for your car repair is an awful feeling. There’s tons of advice on how to avoid getting ripped-off, but few discuss the actual car repair prices. We really need to look at the charges on a car repair estimate or auto repair invoice to determine if we’re paying too much.

The focus needs to shift from giving outdated and ineffective advice to addressing the specific charges. Are they legitimate charges? Can they be justified by industry guidelines?

Now car repair estimates can be confusing. So let’s break it down to get a better idea if your auto repair shop is billing you appropriately.

First, a glossary of terms is in order, as the auto industry has a language of its own…

Aftermarket Parts: parts not made by or for the manufacturer.

MSRP: Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price

OEM: Original Equipment Manufacturer. Manufacturer approved parts designed specifically for your vehicle.

TSBs: Technical Service Bulletins. Notes and instructions provided by the manufacturer for known and specific concerns (they are not recalls).

Flat Fees: services such as alignments that don’t get broken down into parts, tax, labor

Miscellaneous Charges: these can include, but are not limited to shop supplies – rags, chemicals, hazardous waste disposal fees, waste oil …etc.

Labor Rate: a repair center’s hourly charge to service your vehicle

Labor Time: the amount of time or hours determined that it will take to fix your vehicle

Labor Description: the step-by-step written details of repairs and/or services

Ok, let’s look at the Anatomy of an Auto Repair Estimate:

There are six basic components to a car repair estimate

1) Customer/Vehicle Information

2) Parts

3) Labor

4) Miscellaneous Charges

5) Flat Fees

6) Summary of Charges

Customer and Vehicle Information
Using a generic “top down” style estimate, the top portion simply contains your personal information and your vehicle’s specifics: year, make, model, mileage…etc, as well as your request or concern.

We also want find the shop’s labor rate. The labor rate is critical in determining if you paid too much. Most repair centers don’t list the labor rate. We’ll discuss why shortly.

Auto Parts
Parts are listed usually with a brief description, as well as the quantity, and the price. There are three types of parts: OEM (parts made by or for a manufacturer). These are the parts installed by a dealer, although many local shops use OEM parts too.

Aftermarket parts are non OEM parts, and there are various degrees of quality, depending on the brand and where they’re made – China versus USA, for example.

Then there are Used parts purchased from a salvage yard.

To determine if you paid too much for parts, first find out what type of parts are being used. With OEM parts, you don’t want to pay more than MSRP, although most people do without realizing it. Premium aftermarket parts are similarly priced across brands, although beware not to pay more than MSRP, which again, many folks do. Used parts prices are all over the place, so pick the price in the middle.

Auto Repair Labor

Labor is billed in tenths. So 1.0 equals 1 hour. 1.5 equals an hour and a half.
Labor rates range from $60 to $100 per hour at local repair shops and $80 to $140 per hour at the dealer level. Labor times are based off established industry guidelines, which are frequently abused.

If you don’t see the shop’s labor rate posted on the car repair invoice, ask your service center for the rate. Repair shops can manipulate the labor rate (among other things) with a labor matrix. Matrix pricing is a complicated and ethically questionable practice discussed at length in RepairTrust literature. What you need to know is that you can pay as high as $150 per hour rather than the posted labor rate of $105 per hour.

Thus, you’ll want to multiply the number of hours billed (which is also often not posted) by the shop’s labor rate to determine if you’ve been charged accordingly.

Most labor descriptions are poorly written and difficult to understand. So ask questions.

Here’s a “clear” labor description for a 30,000 mile service on a Toyota Camry.

Performed 30,000 mile service per customer request, and in accordance with manufacturer guidelines. Changed oil and filter, installed new air filter, cabin filter and performed all necessary tests, checks, and procedures, including road test (miles 30,123 – 30,125). Performed lubrication services and confirmed proper vehicle operation. Set tire pressures, and checked fluids, belts and hoses. Note: vehicle is pulling slightly left. Needs alignment

Miscellaneous Charges

The bulk of your car repair invoice will be parts and labor, but we can’t forget about Miscellaneous Charges. These charges can include, but are not limited to, shop supplies – rags, chemicals, hazardous waste, disposal fees, waste oil …etc. The latter of these may be billed out separately in a summary at the bottom of your repair invoice.

Very few of these “extras” are actually used during regular repairs. Miscellaneous charges are calculated off the amount of labor hours billed, not the amount of miscellaneous items used.

Flat Fees

Flat fees can be another very tricky area. Flat fees are services, such as an alignment, which don’t get broken down into parts, tax and labor. This makes it difficult to determine the real and fair price. On the plus side, most flat fees are competitively priced.

Be warned however, another term for Flat Fee is called Menu Selling. In other words, you might see Tune Up: $99.99 or Transmission Flush: $89.99. Follow your manufacturer’s recommendations only, not a dealer’s or repair shop’s menu.

For an interesting read on this topic, click
car maintenance costs

Summary of Charges

The last part of an auto repair estimate is the summary of charges. It’s usually found in the bottom right hand corner of the invoice. Check it against the charges above to ensure that it all adds up mathematically, as well as logically.

This basic estimate outline may differ from your particular invoice, which may have other categories such as “Sublet” or “HazMat.”

A sublet charge is added when your auto repair shop uses another vender to fix or repair your car, such as a glass company that replaces your windshield.

A HazMat charge may include waste oil or other disposal fees. Just make sure that the charges are warranted, as again, they too are often calculated off the labor time rather than actual need.

In sum, understanding the “actual” charges, asking the right questions, and breaking down your auto repair costs is the best way to avoid paying excessive car repair prices.
